Explore Beautiful South-Central Colorado
Westcliffe and the Wet Mountain Valley are off the beaten path, but we’re certainly not short on things to do! In addition to all the activities you can enjoy right here on the ranch (horseback riding, hiking, bird watching, fishing, swimming, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, star gazing, bonfires, and just simply being), there’s plenty of fun day trips and drives within a 2-3 hour drive.
Westcliffe and Silvercliff
Westcliffe and Silvercliff are the towns here in the Wet Mountain Valley. Situated on the flanks of the Wet Mountains with incredible views across the verdant ranchland of the valley floor, these towns started during the mining boom of the mid-1800s to become the quaint towns they are today. Follow up an afternoon of shopping with a meal at one of many eateries. Summer is full of music festivals, rodeos, county fair, parades, Shakespeare in the Park, outdoor concerts, and much more.
Our small community also boasts a rec center, Club America, where you can work out or go swimming. Bowling is a great family activity at Cliff Lanes, and if you love golf look no further than St. Andrews 9 hole golf course. Drive 20 minutes north to Texas Creek and take an ATV tour at Play Dirty ATV Tours.
Whitewater Rafting the Arkansas River
Rafting the rapids of the Arkansas River is quite the experience. Take on the Class III – IV rapids in Browns Canyon or see a whole new view of the Royal Gorge – from the river. There are many options depending on how adventurous you want to be. Contact Arkansas River Tours for reservations.
Spend a quiet evening fishing the Music Meadows pond, stocked with plenty of large trout. Or head off to DeWeese Reservoir just north of Westcliffe, or the Arkansas River 30 minutes north of the ranch.
Explore one of the highest suspension bridges in the world. Walk the bridge, ride the zipline, take the train, or just enjoy the incredible view almost 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River. Just 45 minutes from the ranch, Royal Gorge is an incredible day trip.
Family friendly wolf sanctuary and educational facility located just 30 minutes from Music Meadows Ranch. Tour the sanctuary, learn about wolf biology, and even meet the friendly ambassador wolves. The sanctuary focuses on sustainability and operates on solar power as well as growing much of their own produce in high altitude greenhouses. Learn more at www.missionwolf.org.
A huge castle in the Wet Mountains, built entirely by hand. Jim Bishop has been working on this truly unique masterpiece for nearly 60 years. Climb the iron stairs to incredible 100 mile views from the turrets, and if you’re lucky the dragon might breathe fire. Visits are always free, but be aware Jim Bishop doesn’t always share his political and social views in a kid-friendly way. Visit www.bishopcastle.org for more details.
Great Sand Dunes National Park
The tallest sand dunes in North America are located just under 2 hours from Music Meadows Ranch. A very scenic drive takes you over the Sangre de Cristo mountains to the San Luis Valley, where for centuries the winds carried sand to the western flanks of the mountains and deposited it. Play in the sand at Medano Creek, climb the highest dunes, or hike from the sandy dunes through the riparian growth on the creek up to the alpine wilderness of the range.
